Ready to Runway

Remember how the entire world waited an entire summer of reruns and so-so programming to find out who shot J.R. Ewing? Similarly, I have waited, maybe with slightly less anticipation, for the new season of Project Runway. Truthfully, I would like to see more design process and less designer drama.

My superficial pursuits are not limited to the television. I have been doing my fair share of light reading as well. Apparently, Victoria Beckham's treatise on style That Extra Half an Inch is a "smash UK bestseller". This could be the seventh sign, or just further proof of the further decline of the British Empire and possibly Western Civilization.

Visually, the book is too distracting for me to read with any great concentration. There are tons of photos, extra-large fonts for call-outs and a meager 10 point Times Roman typeface for the bulk of the text.
Break out the readers and save your receipt!

With every sentence of Neeeeenah Garceeeeeah's Little Black Book of Style, I am able to visualize the petite pepper perched on her PR judging chair. There is the ubiquitous chapter on dressing for various occasions. While this might be new news for a 20-year old, I hope most of us know appropriate wedding or funeral attire from the inappropriate. Perhaps not.

One thing that Garcia emphasizes a bit more strongly than other books of this type is how to find inspiration. She cites several examples of how style is influenced by film, art, music and travel, and her suggestion of creating a character and costuming that character is a great exercise for defining personal style.

While I am enjoying the book, it might not be a keeper. If I thought I could borrow a copy with ease, I would do so. However, within the vast Mid-Hudson Library System there is but one copy of this book. I imagine that the 53 stylish women peppered throughout the five counties are profoundly perplexed to discover that the wait for this book is so long. They are wondering, "Could there really be that many of us in the Putnam - Orange - Dutchess - Greene - Columbia County area interested in fashion?".

You would not know it, judging from the offerings at the local shops.
